As France reels from record heat, JPMorgan leads race to buy cooling firm in spite of cultural aversion to A/C
Amid soaring summer temperatures in France, JPMorgan Chase is currently leading the race to acquire a French cooling and heating network operator called Idex for at least $3.5 billion. The company is reported to be the frontrunner in the acquisition despite the French cultural aversion to air-conditioning, as reported by Bloomberg.
The division led by Mary Erdoes, a long-time executive at JPMorgan, seems poised to outbid Canada’s CPP Investments for Idex. Idex plays a crucial role in keeping Paris’ business district, La Defense, cool during hot days when French bankers are sweating over government policies.
The heatwave in France has caused temperatures to exceed 104 degrees Fahrenheit, leading to at least 1,000 excess deaths. This has prompted discussions among lawmakers about the necessity of air-conditioning nationwide, as reported by BBC.
Despite the traditional French disdain for air-conditioning, the situation has highlighted the need for cooling solutions. While elites have criticized air-conditioning as American excess, ordinary Parisians have been struggling to cope with the heat using only open windows.
JPMorgan and Antin Infrastructure Partners, the current owner of Idex, have not provided any official comments on the potential acquisition.
The debate around air-conditioning has also extended to the French parliament, with discussions heating up ahead of the presidential election next year. Marine Le Pen has promised a national rollout of air-conditioning if elected, while Jean-Luc Mélenchon opposes the idea, citing potential health risks associated with excessive air-conditioning.
If JPMorgan successfully acquires Idex, it will showcase American capital stepping in to address a pressing need in France that politicians have struggled to resolve. With over $4 trillion in assets under management worldwide, JPMorgan is poised to make a significant impact in the cooling and heating sector in France.
