Spotify removes streams of No. 1 song after suspicious Kalshi bets
Spotify has recently made headlines after removing streams of a song that quickly rose to the top of the charts, following suspicions of market manipulation. The track in question, “Earrings” by musician Malcolm Todd, experienced a sudden 70% surge in streams overnight, propelling it to the number one spot on Spotify’s U.S. streaming chart. However, upon further investigation, Spotify discovered that the streams were not from genuine listeners.
In response to the incident, Spotify promptly removed the streams of the song and emphasized that they have robust detection and mitigation practices in place to combat manipulated streams. They also clarified that royalties associated with these suspicious streams will not be paid out. A spokesperson for Kalshi, the prediction market involved in the suspicious bets, stated that they are currently investigating the matter and are in communication with Spotify.
This incident has raised concerns about the integrity of prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket, with critics questioning whether these platforms have sufficient safeguards against market manipulation and the misuse of nonpublic information. The use of insider knowledge or the ability to influence an event’s outcome to profit from these markets has sparked worries about the potential for abuse.
In a separate but related case from January, a questionable bet placed on the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro raised red flags about the trustworthiness of prediction markets. A U.S. special forces soldier allegedly used classified information about the mission to make the bet, leading to legal charges against him.
Regulation of prediction markets falls under the jurisdiction of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, a federal agency responsible for overseeing these platforms. Despite the billions of venture capital invested in prediction markets, concerns about their transparency and susceptibility to manipulation continue to persist.
As the investigation into the suspicious streams of “Earrings” unfolds, the music industry and prediction market participants alike will be closely monitoring the outcome. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining integrity and accountability in all aspects of the entertainment and financial sectors.
