USPS Sets 2026 Holiday Shipping Dates: When to Mail Gifts and Packages

November 1, 2026 | Consumer Guide — With the holiday shopping season underway, the U.S. Postal Service has published its recommended mailing dates for packages and cards expected to arrive before December 25. The dates are planning guidance, not a promise that every shipment will arrive on time, and customers should account for distance, weather and local acceptance hours.

Recommended deadlines for the lower 48 states

According to the Postal Service’s September 24 announcement, customers sending within the contiguous United States should aim to mail by Thursday, December 17, using USPS Ground Advantage or First-Class Mail. The suggested date for Priority Mail is Friday, December 18, and for Priority Mail Express it is Saturday, December 19.

These are different services with different prices, speeds and eligibility rules. Choosing the latest suggested date does not guarantee arrival, especially for a package with an unusual destination or special handling needs.

Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and U.S. territories

The Postal Service recommends an earlier December 16 date for Ground Advantage shipments to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and U.S. territories. The suggested First-Class Mail, Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express dates are December 17, 18 and 19, respectively. Customers should confirm service availability and delivery estimates for the exact destination.

What about international and military mail?

International packages and mail to APO, FPO and DPO addresses have their own suggested deadlines, sometimes substantially earlier than domestic dates. The USPS holiday shipping guide provides destination-specific information and cautions that customs processing and other conditions can affect delivery.

Three practical ways to avoid last-minute trouble

First, prepare the address carefully, including apartment or unit numbers. Second, check whether the contents are permitted in the chosen mail class, especially for batteries, liquids or other restricted items. Third, compare rates and delivery estimates before buying postage; a heavier or oversized package may cost more than expected.

USPS has also announced seasonal package-pricing adjustments for the peak period, so customers should use current checkout rates rather than assuming prices from earlier in the year still apply.

What it means for the Neighborhood

Families sending gifts to relatives, and small businesses shipping orders, can use these dates as a starting point for a holiday calendar. Mailing early generally gives more flexibility if a package needs to be rerouted or replaced.
