As gas prices surge, consumers search for other savings
The national average for a gallon of gasoline has been steadily increasing since the beginning of the conflict with Iran. In Killeen, Texas, residents like Charles Rice are feeling the pinch, with prices up by $1.28 per gallon. For Rice, this translates to an extra $90 per month to fill up his truck. Despite the rise in prices, he still chooses to fill up at Casey’s General Stores, a popular convenience store chain with locations in small towns across the country.
Casey’s CEO, Darren Rebelez, anticipates a 20% increase in store visits over Memorial Day weekend, marking the start of the chain’s 100 days of summer promotion. Rebelez attributes this boost in traffic to Casey’s competitive fuel pricing strategy. Before the conflict in the Middle East escalated, the national average for a gallon of gas was below $3. However, the current average stands at $4.50, a significant increase of over $1.50 since the war began.
According to AAA, gas prices are expected to remain high, with the U.S. Energy Information Administration forecasting an average of $3.88 per gallon for the remainder of the year and $3.62 per gallon in 2027. As a result of these rising costs, consumers are making adjustments in other areas of their budget. Sales of Casey’s self-branded snacks, priced lower than national brands, have seen an uptick as customers look for more affordable options.
Tiffany Bishop, a Casey’s customer, notes that affordability is a key factor for many families, especially those with children who enjoy picking up snacks. Rebelez emphasizes that Casey’s is committed to providing value to its customers, particularly during times when budgets are stretched thin. The chain’s reputation for offering quality products at competitive prices has made it a go-to destination for cost-conscious consumers.
In the midst of economic uncertainty, Casey’s General Stores continues to serve as a reliable and affordable option for fuel and snacks. As gas prices remain elevated, consumers can rely on Casey’s to provide them with the value they need to navigate these challenging times.
