Baker Hughes to deliver compression units for gas pipeline in Argentina
Baker Hughes Secures Order for Gas Compression Units in Argentina
Baker Hughes has recently announced that it has secured an order from San Matias Pipeline to deliver three gas compression units for a new natural gas pipeline project in Argentina. The equipment, which includes three NovaLT 16 gas turbines paired with centrifugal compressors, will be installed at a station near Allen, Río Negro.
The purpose of this site is to support the transportation of natural gas from the Vaca Muerta resource to the Gulf of San Matias. The gas will be utilized to feed into two floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels operated by Southern Energy. This project marks the first deployment of Baker Hughes’ NovaLT 16 gas turbines in South America.
In addition to delivering the equipment, Baker Hughes will also provide commissioning services, spare parts, specialist tools, and capabilities for remote monitoring and diagnostics. Maria Claudia Borras, Baker Hughes’ Chief Growth and Experience Officer, highlighted the importance of this project in supporting critical gas infrastructure and expanding the company’s presence in Latin America.
The NovaLT platform was selected for its performance, efficiency features, delivery timeline, and suitability for midstream gas compression within the LNG value chain. The turbines achieve impressive efficiency levels, with the ability to reach over 37% in simple-cycle applications and up to 85% in cogeneration configurations.
Operational advantages of the NovaLT 16 turbines include a 45-day installation period, a 35,000-hour interval between major maintenance, and a 24-hour engine swap capability. The turbines also boast lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to previous models and are designed to achieve nine parts per million nitrogen oxides at 15% O₂ across a wide operational range.
This project signifies Baker Hughes’ commitment to supporting energy security and enabling pathways to global LNG markets. The company continues to innovate and provide sustainable solutions for the energy industry.
Prior to this project, Baker Hughes and Tecnimont signed a non-exclusive memorandum of understanding to explore joint participation in future modularized, scalable LNG projects globally. This collaboration highlights the companies’ shared commitment to driving innovation and sustainability in the energy sector.
