David Peterson implodes in Mets ugly loss to Phillies
The New York Mets suffered another disappointing loss on Sunday night against the Philadelphia Phillies, with starting pitcher David Peterson struggling early in the game. Peterson gave up five runs in the first two innings, setting the tone for the Mets’ 6-2 defeat. This loss marked the end of a challenging 2-4 road trip for the Mets, who continue to struggle to find consistency on the field.
One bright spot for the Mets has been their bullpen, which has consistently kept the team in close games. However, the starting pitching has been a major concern, with Peterson’s latest performance adding to the growing list of subpar outings from the rotation. In three appearances this month, Peterson has posted an alarming 12.15 ERA, bringing his season ERA to 6.09.
The game started off on a rough note for Peterson, as he walked the first two batters he faced before giving up a couple of infield singles that led to the Phillies taking an early 2-0 lead. The second inning was even more disastrous for Peterson, as he allowed a three-run homer to Kyle Schwarber, extending the Phillies’ lead to 5-0. Schwarber’s impressive performance continued, as he hit his fourth homer of the series and his 29th of the season.
The Mets managed to get on the board in the third inning with a solo home run from rookie Carson Benge, but it was not enough to overcome the Phillies’ early lead. Bryce Harper added to the Phillies’ advantage with a solo home run in the fifth inning, further solidifying their lead.
The Mets tried to mount a comeback in the sixth inning, scoring a run on A.J. Ewing’s RBI fielder’s choice. However, they were unable to capitalize on a bases-loaded opportunity as Marcus Semien struck out to end the inning.
Overall, it was another frustrating night for the Mets, who continue to struggle to put together a complete performance. With their road trip now behind them, the Mets will look to regroup and find a way to bounce back in their upcoming games.
