Explosions reported in Damascus amid Macron’s visit to Syria, state media says

French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Damascus on Tuesday was marred by at least two explosions in the Syrian capital, according to reports from Syrian state media. The explosions occurred near the Ministry of Tourism building, injuring at least 18 people, including four security personnel.

President Macron was in Damascus to meet with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, marking the first visit by a major Western leader to Syria since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. Assad was ousted after rebel groups, led by Sharaa’s Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, launched a surprise offensive that forced him to flee the country.

Macron’s visit aimed to express France’s commitment to the Syrian people and advocate for a sovereign, united, and peaceful Syria. In a post on social media, Macron emphasized the importance of stability and peace in the region, calling for a new chapter in Syrian history.

The explosions in Damascus come on the heels of another attack last week, where a device detonated in a cafe near the Justice Palace, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 individuals and injuring 20 others. The cause of the recent explosions near the Ministry of Tourism building remains unclear, as Syrian authorities have not yet commented on the incident.
