FBI disrupts plot targeting UFC event at White House with explosive drones: Sources

The FBI recently foiled an alleged plot targeting the “UFC Freedom 250” fights at the White House, with plans involving explosive drones aimed at buildings in the vicinity. FBI Director Kash Patel commended the swift response of law enforcement after becoming aware of the scheme on June 10, just days before the event. Five individuals are currently in custody, including one from Cincinnati, Ohio.

Reports indicate that twenty-three individuals were engaged in Signal chats discussing preoperational details, with some traveling to Fredericksburg, Virginia, around the same time. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security had issued a bulletin earlier in the month cautioning that the fights presented appealing symbolic targets, although no credible threats were identified at the time.

The UFC Freedom 250 event took place on the White House grounds on June 14, coinciding with President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday. The alleged plot involved drones equipped with explosives, intended to prompt a mass evacuation by targeting nearby structures. A subsequent plan to target a security checkpoint was also uncovered.

Patel emphasized the collaborative effort of a “multi-state operation” in responding to the threat. He praised the investigative work that led to the apprehension of suspects, highlighting the ongoing commitment to safeguarding American citizens during significant gatherings like the UFC 250 fight. Law enforcement officials reiterated the prohibition on flying drones over the National Capital Region, with the Secret Service prepared to deploy law enforcement drones for surveillance.

In the face of potential security risks, vigilance from the public was encouraged, with the directive to report any sightings of drones. The successful disruption of the alleged plot underscores the dedication of law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of individuals during high-profile events. ABC News’ Josh Margolin contributed to the coverage of this unfolding situation.
