Federal agents discover man hidden in gas tank in smuggling attempt at US-Mexico border
A recent incident at the US-Mexico border has shocked authorities and the public alike. A man was discovered wedged inside a car’s gas tank in a smuggling attempt that went terribly wrong. The dramatic discovery took place at the San Ysidro Port of Entry between San Diego, California, and Tijuana on February 27.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers encountered a 20-year-old man driving an SUV at the border crossing. A CBP canine team alerted officers to the underside of the vehicle, where they found a Mexican national stuffed inside a non-factory compartment built into the gas tank. The man was in a fetal position, cramped inside the tight tank compartment.
The individual was quickly removed from this “life-threatening” situation and taken to a hospital in Chula Vista to receive treatment for burn injuries sustained during the smuggling attempt. Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle, who remains unidentified, was arrested and booked into the Metropolitan Correctional Center in San Diego. It is unclear whether the stowaway will face legal consequences or be returned to Mexico.
Mariza Marin, the San Ysidro Port Director, emphasized the dangerous and inhumane tactics employed by smugglers in pursuit of profit over human lives. She commended the vigilance and professionalism of CBP officers in locating and rescuing the individual from a perilous situation. Marin reiterated CBP’s commitment to disrupting smuggling operations that endanger public safety.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved in illegal border crossings and the lengths to which smugglers will go to evade detection. It also highlights the crucial role of law enforcement agencies like CBP in safeguarding border security and protecting individuals from harm.
