Judge rejects Trump admin bid to subpoena Minnesota Dems in immigration inquiry

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and other top state officials recently faced a federal judge’s decision to quash a subpoena issued by the Justice Department. The judge ruled that the Trump administration’s attempt to subpoena these officials was a form of harassment rather than a legitimate investigation.

The ruling by Minneapolis US District Judge Patrick Schiltz, which was unsealed on Monday, criticized the Trump administration for using the grand-jury process to harass political opponents. Schiltz emphasized that initiating a criminal investigation for the purpose of coercing political opponents into taking official action is unethical and unlawful.

The subpoenas targeted Governor Tim Walz, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her, and the boards of commissioners in Ramsey and Hennepin counties. Judge Schiltz described the subpoenas as extraordinarily broad, covering a wide range of state’s political leadership and seeking materials related to constitutionally protected conduct.

The subpoenas were issued during the Operation Metro Surge immigration enforcement effort in Minnesota earlier this year, which sparked local backlash following the shooting deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal immigration enforcement agents. The DOJ cited examples of advocacy by members of the Minneapolis City Council to justify the subpoenas, but Judge Schiltz found the connection to any possible criminal conduct to be remote and spurious.

Governor Tim Walz welcomed the judge’s decision as a victory for the rule of law and democracy. He criticized the U.S. Justice Department for pursuing criminal investigations into the President’s political opponents, highlighting the administration’s alleged lawlessness in Minnesota and across the country.

Overall, the ruling by Judge Schiltz serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding the rule of law and preventing government agencies from using investigations as a means of harassing political rivals. It underscores the need for transparency and accountability in the justice system to ensure that investigations are conducted fairly and impartially.
