Rory McIlory fires back at reporter questioning his work ethic

Rory McIlroy found himself in a tense exchange with a reporter during a press conference before the Scottish Open. The reporter seemed to suggest that McIlroy isn’t working hard enough when he’s not playing in tournaments, prompting the golfer to defend his work ethic.

The reporter asked McIlroy if he has to work harder to get up to speed or shake off rust because he doesn’t play as frequently as he used to. The reporter also mentioned seeing McIlroy putting in extra work on the range during his off weeks, which seemed to imply that McIlroy wasn’t working hard enough.

McIlroy, clearly annoyed by the insinuation, shot back by asking the reporter what he thought McIlroy did in his off weeks. The reporter then commented that it seems to come easy to McIlroy, implying that he doesn’t have to work as hard as others. McIlroy quickly shut down the conversation by stating that he does work hard.

Despite the exchange, McIlroy showed his talent on the course during the first round of the Scottish Open. He shot a 5-under 65 to finish the day tied for the lead. Starting on the back nine, McIlroy had a mixed start with two bogeys and three birdies before impressively recording an eagle on the par-5 first hole. He continued his strong play with birdies on holes 7 and 8.

McIlroy, who completed the career grand slam with his Masters win in 2025, has been on a hot streak lately with back-to-back green jackets. Despite some struggles in recent major tournaments, McIlroy’s performance at the Scottish Open shows that he is still a force to be reckoned with on the course.
