Texas man faces jailtime for killing bald eagle that landed in his tree
A heartless act of cruelty has led to a Texas man facing a year behind bars for shooting a bald eagle on his property. Santos Guerrero, 42, confessed to the senseless crime after he fired at the majestic bird while it was perched in a tree at his Port home in October 2024, according to the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas.
The brutal killing was captured on video, showing the protected species plummeting to the ground after being shot by Guerrero. Authorities used the footage to trace the incident back to Guerrero’s residence, where they found the injured eagle still alive and in distress. Despite efforts to save the bird by rushing it to an animal hospital, the injuries were too severe, and the bald eagle had to be euthanized.
A necropsy revealed the extent of the damage caused by Guerrero’s bullet, including significant wing damage, liver fractures, internal bleeding, and a fractured leg from the fall. While Guerrero admitted to shooting the bird as part of a guilty plea, his motive for the cruel act remains unclear.
Although bald eagles are no longer listed as endangered, they are still protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, which prohibits harming or killing these iconic birds. Guerrero now faces up to a year in federal prison and a maximum fine of $100,000 for violating this law. He is scheduled to appear in court for sentencing on July 30.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and protecting our wildlife, especially species like the bald eagle that hold significant cultural and symbolic value in the United States. Let us hope that justice is served for this innocent creature and that such acts of cruelty are not repeated in the future.
