34 arrested during Chicago Pride Parade festivities, police say

The 2026 Chicago Pride Parade and its aftermath in Boystown saw a total of 34 arrests, according to a CPD spokesperson. This number aligns closely with the average number of arrests recorded by CWB Chicago since 2013. Among those arrested, five were juveniles, with charges ranging from battery of peace officers and obstruction to firearm possession. Charges are still pending for two individuals.

As has been the trend in recent years, most of the disturbances occurred after the parade ended as revelers gathered for street parties in the area. This year, CPD employed a strategy of using physical barriers to block off streets, including Belmont Avenue and the Halsted Street bar strip, to limit the space available for crowds to gather. However, this led to party-goers relocating to other streets, such as Broadway, where they took over traffic lanes, hopped on buses, and danced in the street.

Looking back at historical data, the highest number of arrests during the Pride Parade was recorded in 2024, with 53 individuals taken into custody. The lowest number of arrests occurred in 2018, with only 16 arrests. Arrest numbers decreased significantly in 2016 and remained relatively low until the parade was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The decrease in 2016 coincided with increased involvement from federal agencies in securing the parade following the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando.

Overall, the Chicago Pride Parade continues to draw large crowds and celebrations, but efforts to maintain safety and control post-parade festivities remain a challenge for law enforcement. Despite the arrests, the event remains a symbol of unity and celebration for the LGBTQ+ community.
