Dozens of live pythons found on truck attempting to cross Mexican border

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers made a startling discovery during a routine inspection at the Texas-Mexico border. On March 5th, officers at the World Trade Bridge encountered a tractor-trailer attempting to cross into Mexico, only to find a surprising cargo onboard.

The driver was selected for inspection after denying that the vehicle contained any prohibited items. To their surprise, officers discovered 39 pythons hidden inside the tractor. These live snakes were individually packaged in small bags and were in poor condition.

Port Director Alberto Flores of the Laredo Port of Entry commended the vigilance and dedication of the CBP officers in enforcing laws that protect both borders and the environment. The US Fish and Wildlife Service agents took custody of the pythons and transported them to a controlled environment for their well-being.

The quick action of border officers prevented further harm to these reptiles. As a result of the export violations, CBP officials issued a penalty of $34,824 related to the incident. Flores emphasized that CBP remains committed to preventing the illegal importation and exportation of wildlife and ensuring compliance with all federal regulations.

The interception of the live pythons at the World Trade Bridge highlights the importance of border security and the enforcement of laws to protect endangered species. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to safeguard wildlife and maintain the integrity of our borders.
