Chicago Man Sentenced to Over 12 Years for Bank Robbery

A Chicago man, Emeril England, has been sentenced to more than 12 years in federal prison for robbing a suburban bank using mace and a fire extinguisher. England pleaded guilty to the crime, as per court records.

The incident took place at the Huntington Bank in Northbrook on May 28, 2025. England, wearing a disguise ordered online, attempted to rob the bank by spraying tellers with mace and discharging a fire extinguisher. Despite his efforts, the tellers did not comply with his demands, and one even expressed concern for his well-being.

After causing chaos with the fire extinguisher, England managed to steal approximately $4,915 from an open cash drawer before fleeing the scene. However, his getaway was foiled when a vigilant Metra employee noticed his suspicious behavior and reported it to authorities.

Following the tip-off, investigators tracked England to his apartment in Chicago, where they found evidence of the robbery, including a pellet gun, a wig, pepper spray, and a significant amount of cash. England confessed to the crime and admitted to planning future bank robberies while in custody.

Despite England’s documented mental health issues and cognitive impairments, prosecutors argued that he was still capable of carrying out violent crimes. As a result, U.S. District Judge John Kness sentenced England to 151 months in prison, the minimum recommended by prosecutors.

The case serves as a reminder of the consequences of criminal actions and the importance of law enforcement in apprehending perpetrators of such crimes.
